The County Tree Council has released its 2008 annual report with a summary of CTC activities for the year
A big planting took place at Chase Elementary School on Monday Jan 19, 2009 during the MLK Day of Service. After the recent renovation and expansion of the school, many areas were left with no tree cover. A coalition of administrators, parents, neighbors and the CTC worked together to fund and plant two groves with a total of 25-30 trees. Many thanks to all of the volunteers. A third grove is planned for the future. On the 2010 MLK day of service another large contingent of volunteers mulched all the trees that had been planted the previous year. This sort of maintenance helps ensure long-term survival of the plantings.
On Saturday, Feb 23, 2008 a planting of Trees for Tomorrow was held on Prince Ave. Continuing in a tradition of renewing the plantings of Dogwoods along Prince Ave. between Pulaski and Milledge, over thirty volunteers joined in on this historic planting activity. The project was made possible through a collaboration between the CTC, the Boulevard Neighborhood Assoc and the Historic Cobham Foundation with financial assistance from the Heyward Allen Motor Co, REM, Athens Grow Green Coalition and many individuals.
Funded by a $6000 GA Forestry Commission grant and a match from a private donor, Trees for Tomorrow is a funding vehicle used to plant trees on public lands in honor of individuals, groups, events, etc. The program is administered by the CTC and is meant to consolidate a number of other "memorial tree" type programs. The first major project at Ben Epps airport is planted out though donors are still being sought. Planting Prince was conducted in 2008 and the Chase St. Elementary planting took place in January 2009. Future sites have been identified but if an interested group steps forward with a special site, we welcome such input.
The Athens-Clarke County Landscape Management Department maintains a number of publications on their site. They have a quarterly newsletter as well as useful documents on Southern Pine Beetle, Crepemyrtle, Pruning, and other aspects of trees and tree care
Learn the proper way to prune your Crapemyrtle with this How-to guide from the CTC. The guide tells you why NOT to top your trees and how to properly prune for optimal, healthy growth.
Recently, residents have noticed a change in the manner of tree pruning by local utility companies. The new method, called natural target pruning is explained in this flyer.
