$5,000 UPS/ Keep America Beautiful Grant funded to schoolyard orchards!
Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful (KACCB) has been funded $5,000 through a UPS/Keep America Beautiful Grant to plant orchards on two middle school campuses – Clarke Middle School (CMS) and Coile Middle School. Grant partners include; the Community Tree Council, CCSD Agriculture Programs, Athens-Clarke County Cooperative Extension, the local UPS Customer Service Center, and KACCB.
Fifty-one trees including figs, persimmon, pomegranate, paw paw, pear, apple, plum, and pecan as well as muscadine vines and blueberries bushes will be planted this fall. The orchard plantings will provide the teachers with outdoor learning spaces to teach the environmental, economic, and aesthetic significance of green spaces while providing the students and underserved community with fresh, healthy, locally grown fruits and nuts.
