The Athens-Clarke County (ACC) Community Tree Council (CTC) was established on October 3, 2000 by ordinance of the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County. The CTC is comprised of 15 members, 10 are nominated by the Commissioners to represent the 10 Districts in Athens-Clarke County , one is nominated by the mayor to represent that office, and three are nominated to represent professions or activities relevant to the CTC in fulfilling its mission. The ACC Community Forester serves as the permanent Secretary for the CTC and is the 15th voting member.
Mission: To provide the vehicle for broad-base community representation to interact with local Government, the private sector and citizen groups by advancing tree information and recommendations, and offering educational opportunities promoting the responsible stewardship of trees and the sustainability of current community forest resources while providing the option for future change.
- Provide current updated tree and forest information through an interactive Community Forest Information System (CFIS) to local government, the private sector and the citizens of Athens-Clarke County
- Offer programs, forums and events targeting local government, business, institutions, civilian advocacy groups and citizens of Athens-Clarke County.
- Promote sustainability and responsible management of ACC community trees, and provide opportunity for broad-based local involvement.
- Collaborate with ACC Landscape Management Division, working groups and partners to develop application demonstrations highlighting the value of trees, and encouraging tree conservation.
In addition to the President, Treasurer and Secretary, the fifteen-member CTC is composed of an Executive Committee, a Steering Committee, three Standing Committees and a Coordinator who serves as permanent staff. The Executive Committee includes the current Council Officers (President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary) whose function is administrative in nature, and convenes only to resolve emergency or extremely time-critical issues. Overall planning, policy development and priority setting support is supplied through a Steering Committee composed of the Standing Committee Chairs, and the Council Executive Committee. The CTC is structured so focus can be directed toward the three major functions of the Council through standing committees as illustrated below.
