The official National Arbor Day celebration is held the third week in April (the first being April 22, 1932). Because of its
southern geographical position, Arbor Day in Georgia is celebrated on the third Friday in February. The activities of the CTC
are such as to recognize the third week in February as "Arbor Day Week". Highlights included:
- Arbor Day School program. A mid-week activity, the Arbor Day School program features a tree planting ceremony at a local
elementary school. In 2004 the location was Barnett School Elementary School. A healthy white oak sapling (a scion of
the Tree that Owns Itself) was planted. Adding to the occasion was a unique song written for the occasion by Pam Blanchard
(an accomplished teacher and songwriter) and performed by the children. This was followed by the announcement of the winners
of an art and essay competition by children in the first to fifth grades. Click on the thumbnail images below for a pictorial
summary of events.
- Arbor Day Luncheon. Culminating Arbor Day Week was the CTC annual Arbor Day Luncheon. The 2004 event drew a record number of attendees without a single open seat available. Several Commissioners were present along with the Mayor, who gave the annual Arbor Day proclamation. A brief presentation of the CTC Annual Report was delivered and the change of leadership recognized with the passage of the gavel to the new Chair (now President). The real substance of the occasion was highlighted by a keynote by Dick Field, the newly appointed Environmental Coordinator for Athens-Clarke County. This was followed by Friends of Trees presentations and awards for the art and essay competition at Barnett Shoals Elementary School.
