Leaves: Alternate, simple oblong-ovate, 2" to 5" long 1 to 1 ?" wide. Leaf margins finely serrate with lustrous dark green above, light green below often with long shaggy hairs along the midrib that are not matted.

Notes: The Black Cherry becomes oval headed with age, with pendulous branches often supporting large galls. The species is highly valuable commercially and grows well on deep, moist fertile soils (such as this one), but are often found on dry, gravely upland soils. The Black Cherry is very common throughout the eastern United States and grows well in the Athens-Clarke county area.

Bark: Gray to black and scaly on large stems.
