Leaves: Alternate, simple, oblong 3 - 6E long 1 to 3Ewide, doubly serrate, unequal at the base, lustrous dark green and glabrous (smooth) above, and fuzzy white below.

Notes: The American elm is a classic example of the dangers of imported plant materials with included pests, and having no natural enemies at the point of import. Once a magnificent and dominant species covering a wide range from New England, the mid-west to Georgia, it is rare to see a specimen like the one shown here because of the devastation caused by the imported Dutch elm disease. One almost as large, and former champion, is to be found on the UGA north campus quadrangle.

Bark: Dark gray with broad intersecting ridges, and is often scaly.
