Notes: Native to China, the Ginkgo has adapted well to the climate ranges in eastern North America including the Georgia Piedmont. Heavy upward and outward branching are identifying characteristics of the species, making them difficult as street plantings, although this is a common use. As a stand-alone in the landscape, few trees surpass the Ginkgo for sheer beauty, especially in the fall with its striking yellow foliage. The Ginkgo is dioecious, meaning there are male and female trees. This is one of those few cases where maleness is to be preferred. The fruit on the female tree is offensively odiferous and should be avoided whereever people congregate, though people in Asia eat the nuts.

Bark: Light brown turning gray and becoming stringy and shaggy with age.
