Notes: Mockernut hickory is found throughout the hardwood forests of the southern piedmont in association with other hickorys, oaks and yellow poplar, It is a larger tree than most other species of hickory and like other hickory, the bark, wood and fruit are extremely hard. The tree makes a good specimen tree where it has room to grow, and the fall color lends a deep golden yellow to golden brown to the multicolored landscape. The wood has limited commercial value because of its hardness, but can be found in baseball bats, farm implement handles and some furniture. While the hickory nut is edible, it is hard to extract, and serves a limited role in mast production for wildlife.

Bark: Dark gray, thin with shallow furrows with narrow flat ridges forming a net-like pattern
