Notes: Pignut hickory is found throughout the hardwood forests of the southern piedmont in association with other hickory, oak and yellow poplar species. It is a large tree exhibiting many of the same characteristics as other hickory's. The tree makes a good specimen tree where it has room to grow, and the fall color lends a deep golden yellow to golden brown to the multicolored landscape. The commercial uses of this species is the same as the other hickory's and in the timber business, little differentiation is made between them. While the hickory nut is edible, it is hard to extract, and serves a limited role in mast production for wildlife. It is a hard tree to find in a nursery and is slow growing. If a natural one is available, it is wise to keep it.

Bark: A gray-brown developing rounded ridges forming an irregular diamond-shaped pattern.
