Leaves: Alternate, simple, evergreen, leathery, oblong-ovate, 2" to 4" long, 1" to 2" wide with large remote spiny teeth, from a single spine to 7 or 8 per side. Dull to dark green above and yellowish-green below.

Notes: The American Holly is a commonly found, small landscape tree, with a wide range of distribution. A male and female specimen is required for a full foliage and berry display, and the tree must be planted in a well-drained environment. A variety of insects and disease threaten the holly, not the least of which is twig dieback as evidenced on this Champion.

Bark: Gray, thin and often roughened by irregular wart-like excretions.
