Notes: The American Hornbeam (Ironwood, Blue Beech, Musclewood) occurs naturally as a small to medium understory species in hardwood bottomland forests. The species does well on dry sites also and is an ideal small tree for underplanting in a woodlands environment. It performs best in deep, rich, moist and slightly acid soil, and can stand periodic flooding. The tree grows vigorously in partial or full shade and has a wide range of potentially difficult landscape conditions.
