Leaves: Alternate, simple 4�Eto 8�Elong usually with 7 lobes. Sinuses cut deeply almost to main rib, lustrous dark green above. Acorns: ovoid/oblong sitting in thick, shallow, saucer-shaped cup on a short stalk.

Notes: Considered one of the larger of the southern red oaks, the Shumard oak can grow to 150�Ein height while developing a large round open crown. The Shumard oak produces high quality timber for construction, flooring and furniture, and is often considered more valuable than northern red oak. The species is well suited to the Athens area, but is a large tree best suited to forest or open spaces.

Bark: Similar to many oaks in bark characteristics. Grayish brown, thin and smooth. With age, develops shallow, narrow ridges.
