Notes: The Sugarberry resembles its northern cousin, the Hackberry, and it is sometimes called Southern Hackberry or Sugar Hackberry. In the wild it prefers river banks and well drained alluvial clays and loams. It seldom grows in large stands but occurs occasionally with several associates including; sweetgum, green ash, overcup oaks and bitter pecan. However, the species seems to thrive in a variety of wet and dry conditions and makes a good tree for open planting in parks and large areas.

Bark: Light gray and smooth with cork-like ridges being reduced to wart-like protrusions as the tree ages.
