Leaves: Whorled or opposite, simple 4" to 8" long 3" to 8" wide, apex curves sharply to a point, base Heart shaped, dark green above, paler below, on 4" to 6" petiole. Terminal bud is absent.

Notes: A medium tree suited to the Athens area but limited in use because of coarse appearance Catalpa has a wide tolerance of soil types and may do well in an otherwise difficult spot.

Bark: Similar to F. grandiflora, but a little darker, developing an elephant-hide appearance in old age.
