Chalkbark Maple

Leaves: Chalkbark maple leaves are very similar to the leaves of the Sugar Maple, but in miniature. Five lobed and oppositely arranged, the Chalkbark Maple leaf can be easily mistaken for the Florida Maple,(A. barbatum), but the leaves are medium green on top and soft-pubescent below whereas the Florida Maple leaves are smooth and dark green above and pubescent gray-green below.

Notes: The Chalkbark Maple is considered one of the southern "sugar" maples, the other being the Florida Maple (A. barbatum), and the two are often confused. Tree size, and leaf arrangement, size and shape are similar. Differentiation can be made with regard to (1) leaf color (as described above), (2) topographic location (Chalkbark Maple commonly found on dry uplands, Florida Maple along stream bottoms and wetland situations), and (3) fall foliage (Florida Maple colorful but subdued, Chalkbark Maple a dazzling display of color), The Chalkbark Maple would enhance any landscape and is generally under-utilized in this capacity.

Bark: A smooth whitish and somewhat patchy bark from which the tree derives its name.
