Notes: We know of no tree species with wider geographical distribution than the Red Maple. From Newfoundland and the Atlantic coast to Minnesota and southeastward to Florida, the Red Maple or one of its many cultivars can be found. It is considered a medium to large tree and has little commercial value in wood products because of the propensity for developing heart rot as the tree ages. The Red Maple's main value is as a landscape tree because of its rapid growth and shade production. Many cultivars have been developed to enhance the brilliant fall foliage for which the species has become famous, however the tendency has been to over use.

Bark: On young trees, smooth and light gray: old trees dark gray and rough, scaly and/or ridged and furrowed (as pictured above).
