PURPOSE

The purpose of the Education Committee is to establish and maintain Council driven education and outreach programs at the elementary, secondary and adult level with focus on schools, the private sector, and neighborhood organizations, and to collaborate with other entities local and national, public and private in the development of joint programs promoting trees and the forest resource as targeted to the entire A-CC community.

ACTIVITIES
1. Arbor Day
2. Tree City USA
3. Greenfest
4. Friends of the Trees
5. Speakers Bureau

I. Arbor Day

The official National Arbor Day celebration is held the third week in April (the first being April 22,1932). Because of its southern geographical position, Arbor Day in Georgia is celebrated on the third Friday in February. The activities of the CTC are such as to recognize the third week in February as Arbor Day Week.
A school celebration mid-week is the primary focus of Arbor Day. The school program involves an outside tree planting activity and a commemorative program featuring Arbor Day and the announcement of the poster and essay contest winners. Beginning in 1999 at Fowler Drive Elementary School, a seedling from that magnificent white oak (The Tree that Owns Itself) has been planted at a local elementary school.

II. Tree City USA

Athens has been designated a Tree City by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

III. Greenfest

The Tree Council is a supporter and avid participant in the annual Athens Greenfest.

IV. Friend of the Trees

The CTC honors someone every year as a Friend of Trees. This individual or organization has demonstrated an unusal commitment to trees in the community.
V. Speakers Bureau

The CTC offers a Speaker's Bureau that can customize a presentation tailored to your group's interests.
