The Martin Luther King Day of Service was an excellent opportunity to start the year off on the right foot. A large abandoned field (railroad siding) adjacent to the Council for Ageing facility under went a major clean up where tree planting activity was included.

The event was partnered by a number of organizations including: the A-CC Community Tree Council, A-CC Landscape Management Division (LMD), Keep Athens-Clarke County Clean and Beautiful and the A-CC Council on Ageing. The CTC and LMD focused primarily on the tree planting activity, placing six large Shumard Oaks spaced over the length of the property. Underwriting the cost of the trees was Athens First Bank and Trust Co. as part of their 75th birthday celebration and community recognition. Click here to view the activities. It should be pointed out that several other potential planting sites fall within the old Athens Central Service District.

Arbor Day activities are a high point in the Education Committee calendar, but it is the responsibility of the Finance Committee to secure sponsors and donators to underwrite the cost of the events, primarily the cost of the luncheon and the presentation of the various awards. To view the events of that week, check the Education page for pictures and details.

Because of the fine relationship the CTC has developed with Athens First Bank and Trust, they agreed to underwrite the primary cost of the Arbor Day Luncheon. In addition, Dick Field (the newly installed A-CC Environmental Coordinator) agreed to deliver the Keynote speech at that event. The word got out, and the CTC enjoyed the largest turn out ever for this event.

One of the premier events of the year was the tour of the Lamar Dodd art collection at the home of C. L. Moorhead. He was a delightful host and kept his visitors well entertained throughout the tour. Except for ticket printing, very little cost was incurred by the CTC and the visitors were extremely pleased with the event to the point we were thanked for providing them the opportunity. In the world of fund-raising this would score as a win-win event.
