Beginning in 1997 the Urban Tree Advisory Committee, followed by the Community Tree Council, has presented the Friend of Trees Award to persons or organizations that exemplify good stewardship of trees in Athens-Clarke County. Selection of recipients is based on the use and/or preservation of trees in unique ways that enhance property aesthetics and/or demonstrate protection and concern for the environment. Since 1997, 34 awards have been presented.
The Community Tree Council is pleased to present the 2007 Friend of Trees Award to Joe Sanders.
This year the CTC is proud to be able to honor Joe Sanders who, for nearly a century, has been involved in the stewardship of trees.
The most visible symbols of this stewardship are the trees he has nurtured on his own property for over fifty years. He has the Georgia State Champion of the Dawn Redwood and the Ohio Buckeye as well as the County Champion Star Magnolia
Not only has he planted on his own property but he has cultivated and donated numerous seedlings for replanting in projects all over the area.
